Celebrate and Recognize Excellence!

The ECA’s – Educational Council Awards will celebrate and recognize excellence in Ohio’s Afterschool and Out-of-School Time programs, as well as the individuals, organizations and partners who are exemplary in delivering such work.

Overview

As an inaugural addition to the Annual “Off to a Great Start!” Conference produced and hosted by After School Counts, 3 ECA’s will be presented to selected individuals, programs or partners in 2010. Recipients will be acknowledged among their peers during a special awards reception during this year’s conference.


Programs, organizations and partners may be nominated for excellence in the following categories, but not limited to:

  • Exceptional, creative or innovative activities
  • Effective evaluation methods
  • Outstanding management practices
  • Exemplary use of volunteers
  • Effective outreach and engagement

Partners can include teachers, principals, school, parents, civic organizations, faith-based groups, community-based organizations, or businesses.  Nominations for partners should focus on the ongoing and outstanding contribution(s)  partners makes to programs.

Eligibility

Program must be an After School or Out-of-School Time program. Government-sponsored, faith-based, school-based and community-based programs are also eligible.

Nomination Requirements

Each nomination should include the following:

  1. Name of the organization and its director, name of the program, individual, and or partner being nominated
  2. Mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address of the organization/ program, individual or partner being nominated
  3. Name, title, phone number, e-mail address and mailing address of the person submitting the nomination

The nomination must also include a narrative not exceeding 2 pages that includes two sections:

  1. Program Overview - A description of the program including:
    • Need which the program addresses; characteristics/needs of the youth served
    • Key program activities; evidence that the activities reflect a high quality program
    • Results or outcomes achieved; how do we know the program is effective?
    • How can other organizations learn from and replicate the successful practices of this program or partner?
    • Capacity to address challenges effectively; what challenges were encountered in implementing the program or activity, and how were they overcome
  2. Rationale for Nomination— Why the program is being nominated for an award. This section should include a clear and compelling rationale for the nomination with evidence and examples of the exemplary efforts of the program or partner. When nominating it is encouraged that additional materials such as letters of support, pictures, student’s work, and videos are included (please note: these materials will not be returned). All nominations will be evaluated on the criteria of program quality (as documented by the need for the program, activities, outcomes and capacity to overcome challenges) and the strength of the description of the excellence demonstrated by the nominated program or partner

Deadline

Nominations are due on or before August 1, 2010.

Judging and Notification

A committee representing a cross-section of stakeholders will review the applications and notify the recipients within the first week of August each year.

Award Presentation

The inaugural awards will be presented at the “Off to a Great Start!” Conference during the ECA’s (Educational Council Awards) Reception.
